Fear Leads To Murder
I think the most important theme of the book is fear. Fear plays a big part in the book. Fear also has alot to do with Bigger's actions like killing Mary and Bessie.
"He paused, hysterical. He wanted too run from the basement and go as far possible from the sight of this bloody throat. But he could not. He must not. He had to burn this girl." This really shows how Bigger is afraid and wants to leave and not do what he's doing. This also shows how fear is a huge part in this book because Bigger killing Mary is huge part of the book.
"He wanted to move from the bed, but was afraid he would stumble over something and Mrs.Dalton would hear him, would know that someone besides Mary was in the room." This shows how Bigger was scared that Mrs.Dalton would find out he was in Mary's room with her. The fear of Mary talking and Mrs.Dalton coming to the bed is what made him put the pillow over Mary's face. Out of fear is why he killed Mary.
