Blindness(to be blind literally and figuratively speaking)occurs in 'Native Son' throughout the whole book. Blindness is the most important theme of the book, because its a main factor in 'Native Son'.
In 'Native Son' blindness occurs in two ways. Mrs.Dalton, Biggers employer's wife, is literally blind feeling her way around when she walks with her hands. The second kind of blindness occurs in 'Native Son' figuratively."She responded to him as if he were human, as if he lived the same world as she."(pg.65)Mary is blind to the fact that she is treating him differently than he's used to, which makes him uncomfortable. This kind of blindness keeps happening throughout Bigger's actions.
Bigger accidentally kills Mary in her room and gets rid of her body in the furnace. Bigger is blind to the fact that he's digging himself deeper into trouble than if he'd just come forward and turn himself in. "He could,he-he could put her in th furnace. He would burn her!"(pg.91)
Actions such as this clouded and blinded him from what he was actually getting himself into. Blindness is an important theme in Bigger's life. All of his actions he commits he becomes blind everytime he trys to cover up his mess
