McMurphy

I think that McMurphy is in fact going a little insane.. when he came to the ward he himself was already a little tainted from doing shady things and coming from jail, getting thrown into the loony bin just helped the cause i think.

"Mr. McMurphy... my friend... i'm not a chicken, i'm a rabbit." (Harding, p.60)
Things said like this make people go crazy. Imagine waking up everyday to people that couldn't go about their day normally, it's like working backwards. I think that because McMurphy realizes that and so he lets himself get a little crazy sometimes because he knows he's not the crazy one but acting like it gets what he wants and he finds it amusing.. maybe a way to get through this.

Its like that one time their in the rec room and their playing cards and the music in the background is blasting over the speakers everyone acts like its normal but McMurphy is the only one complaining that it is too loud and annoying.

How did you feel when you were done researching for book did the way you think about things changed at all?

Chief Broom

I chose Bromden. Bromden is quiet and keeps to himself, he persuades others in the ward by making them think that he is a mute and deaf but in reality he only does this to be left alone.

Bromden is afraid of alot of things and he thinks plenty of bad thoughts and he also keeps to himself faking being a mute and deaf. But in watching McMurphy walk around the ward basically taking control, i think Bromden is maybe starting to realize what actually goes on and is becoming less afraid or no.. more open. Like right before lights out when McMurphy said to Bromden that it was almost lights out and the black boy was coming to tuck him in "why you sure did give a jump when i told ou that coon was coming, chief. i thought somebody told me you was deef." Because Bromden reacted quickly to what he said when he suppose to be "deaf"



Will Bromden speak out revealing that he can hear and talk?

Will Bromden change the way he acts in the ward because of McMurphy?

A Way Out

"I raised him up out of nothing, right out of the gutter."(Wolfshiem,179)

I think the American dream means to kind of go and get what you want out of life and make lots of money while doing so. Like living a certain lifestyle and then taking a complete turn and moving on from that to make something out of yourself.

I believe that when you want something so bad that you should go out and get it and i think thats why most end in tragedy because people are so consumed in their thoughts about what they're working for that they start to not care about other things in life, these things that got people out of the gutter eventually come back to send them right back.

"They hate because they fear, and they fear because they feel that the deepest feelings of there lives ae being assaulted and outraged."(p.390, Max)

Even when pleading guilty Bigger had no chance of making it. The hate that the white people had for bigger was so strong that it didn't even matter why he did what he did. In the eyes of the white people Bigger was just another black criminal that needed to be dealt with. And to have one of their white girls killed by a black man there was no way that he would stay alive. So in reality hate decided the outcome for Bigger's life before he even went to trial, the day Bigger killed Mary he too died with her.

Hate and fear run hand in hand, most hate comes from fear. Bigger hated so many things but it wasn't the fact that he just didn't like them. Bigger hated out of fear, and he used hate as a way to vent the fear he had for something. Bigger feared the white people because they had power over him, richer than him, and for those reasons Bigger hated white people with a passion. Vice versa the white people were scared of black people, why because they didn't want them to have any power in society they didn't want them to have equal opportunities it scared them stiff, so out of fear they discriminated and the hated.

Bruno Hauptmann

"yeah. they usually bump 'em off. they're scared of 'em after they get 'em. they think they might identify them afterwards."(p.192)

What bigger did was similar to a crime done in 1932 by Bruno Hauptmann. Bruno kidnapped the baby of Charles and Ann Lindebergh and left a note that held a ransom of 50,000 to get their child back. The ransom was paid but the child was never returned, two months later the child ws found dead in the woods. Bigger has a ransom for 10,000 but has no intentions of returning mary since she is already dead.

Bruno Hautmann and blindness... blind to the fact that he would eventually get caught, and when the parents for thinking everything would be okay after they paid.

Why wouldn't bigger get someone to write the letter for him and not in his own handwriting?

What is Bigger going to do if he succeeds in getting the money, will he still work for the Dalton's or willl he leave?

White Cat

"The white cat bounded past him and leaped upon the desk; it sat looking at him with large placid eyes and mewed paintively."(p.47)

To bigger the cat is just as threatning as the white people that own it, but for Mrs. Dalton it might represent how she might have power big like the cat because of her wealth but also delicate and needs attention because of her blindness.

Might be curiosity, pity, seeing the cat with Mrs. Dalton and she being blind... linked with fear maybe because Mrs. Dalton is blind but the cat might act as her eyes.

How does the cat affect biggers opinion of the Dalton's place?

Even though Mrs. Dalton is blind she probably knows what goes on but she says nothing about it why is that?
