I think Tom Hagen still has some thoughts about the importance of his morals . In Tom's job it's clear that he isn't involved in the dirty work of the family business he can justify his role .Tom is to high in the family business and to important to the Corleone's to risk his life or risk going to prison. Another reason he shows thoughtfulness about his morals is he is loyal to his family. He won't trade on them when things get tough, for example; when Sallozzo kidnaps Tom he said he will setup the deal with Corleone's but instead they make a plot to have Sollozzo killed. "It's not too late to back out, mike,we can get somebody else, we can go back over alternatives. maybe it's not necessary to get rid of Sollozzo."(p.144) Tom said to Michael. Hagen questioned the morality of killing Sollozzo, and whether it is the right thing to do. Hagen knows his family is dirty but he wants so bad to have a family that he over looks the most immoral actions by the family.
